6.2 Discussion. Qualitative and Quantitative Methods. How to Decide?

Getting Started

In this discussion, you will explore qualitative research as a final examination of research designs for this course. There are many myths and stereotypes about qualitative research. Some people believe that only quantitative methods are appropriate so that a rigorous study can be undertaken. However, there are quite a few sound reasons to conduct a qualitative study. And, if the scientific method, along with guidelines provided by experts on conducting a qualitative study, are used, then a qualitative study can be just as rigorous and scientific as a quantitative study. Thus, you will take a look at some of the important aspects to consider in conducting a qualitative research study. Consider, too, whether your research question (for your research proposal) would benefit from a qualitative study.

Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:

· Evaluate qualitative and quantitative methods to discern when they should be used in research.

Background Information

For this discussion, you will not only evaluate qualitative research but also apply what you have learned about qualitative and quantitative research methods to your own research proposal. Communicate with your peers and instructor to see if there is any way to make your research proposal stronger, and to learn more about qualitative research. Note that you are not required to change anything in your research proposal; rather, consider whether a qualitative study (if you didn’t select that design) would be appropriate for your research question.
